Oliver Twist: A letter to Charles Dickens

Muhammad Fatih Putra Nugraha, Boyolali, Indonesia, October 6, 2021

Dear Mr. Charles, Oliver Twist, I only read the short version of your book. However, it takes 1 month to finish the books. It is difficult to understand your writing style, your language, and the object that you try to convey. Yet, we live in different era and country which mean different lexical, but I think we will have the same opinion if we talk about inequality, hunger, and poverty. Also, I would like to do a soft talk about writing a story, my CAS is writing a novel and I like to include a global issue inside my story. In this first series of novel, I am including freedom and government, for the next chapter I hope I could hear your suggestion about the story that include hunger and inequality as the theme.

I want to give a glance of my opinion in term of literature. Oliver Twist is a book that written almost 200 years before my birthday. A novel that pushes through space and time. A novel written by a great writer from Great Britain in 1839, has been read by a high school student from a country that lies in the far east in 21st centuries. I discovered many new things from your novel including: the story, characters style, atmosphere of London in 19th centuries, unique words, and writing styles.

Also, there are some parts that I want to criticize in this story. I already read and watch so many stories from many countries and all of them have their uniqueness. However, they are some shortfalls of your story including lack of characters’ background, straightforward plot, and the story that escalated quickly.

Then I try to highlight two interesting topics inside your story. First, your characters are conveying a purity of both good-and-bad polar. Purity in here means that they are become evil or good since their first appearance, without clear explanation about the background. Oliver Twist and Mr. Brownlow is a pure protagonist and Bill Sikes and Mr. Bumble is a pure antagonist. I guess based on your way to construct the characters I could imagine your experience and I feel sorry about that. However, I very appreciate the character development and the method is inspiring me to apply it in my story.

Second, the problem that you include inside the story is not cease until now. It is seemed that we live in the world that faced the same issues. Nowadays, hunger and inequality still thrive. Yet, I have met many poor peoples in my country like the characters inside the novel. Fortunately, United Nation, a world-range organization that pursue peace in earth, already established some goals that humanity should fulfill to. It is Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs. Your theme is placed in the first and second number in the goals which is “No Poverty” and “Zero Hunger”, what a remarkable act! What do you think, sir?

I hope you understand my language, Pradita Dirgantara High School is pursuing my skills in English especially in language and literature. I’m still trying to use good language stuff and seek for good literature reference. Thank you for writing Oliver Twist that inspiring me and many other students so much.
